A new study from Zero Carbon Analytics suggests that Japan's decarbonisation projects in Southeast Asia may be inadvertently prolonging the use of fossil fuels in the region. The study indicates that initiatives such as projects involving liquefied natural gas, ammonia co-firing with coal plants, and carbon capture and storage are actually designed to extend fossil fuel production. This presents a critical contradiction in efforts to combat climate change, as these projects could potentially perpetuate reliance on fossil fuels rather than facilitating a transition to cleaner, renewable energy sources.
